Stainless steel grade F55 has excellent corrosion resistance to a wide range of areas, especially resistance to pitting andcrevice corrosion in seawater and other chloride containing environments, with critical pitting temperature that is more than 50°C(122°F). This material is known to also have high strength and extended lifecycle. It is 10% lighter than grade 316 steel,ideal for sub-zero service, and more cost effective than nickel alloys. Processing
1. Raw Material Preparation: Select high-quality carbon steel, stainless steel (e.g., 304, 316) or alloy steel billets, conduct chemical composition analysis and mechanical property testing to ensure compliance with standards (e.g., ASME B16.5, DIN 2501).
2. Cutting & Blank Making: Use plasma cutting, flame cutting or sawing machines to cut the billets into blanks of specified size, removing surface defects (e.g., cracks, inclusions).
3. Heating: Heat the blanks in a heating furnace to 1100-1250℃, ensuring uniform temperature distribution for plastic deformation.
4. Forging: Adopt open die forging or closed die forging to shape the blanks into flange roughcasts, forming the basic structure (e.g., flange face, socket weld end).
5. Trimming & Deburring: Remove flash and burrs from the forged roughcasts using trimming dies or grinding tools to improve dimensional accuracy.
6. Heat Treatment: Perform annealing, normalizing or quenching-tempering treatment to eliminate internal stress, enhance mechanical properties (e.g., tensile strength, toughness) and improve machinability.
7. Machining:- Turn the roughcasts on a lathe to process the sealing face (e.g., RF, FF), outer diameter, inner diameter and thickness.- Drill bolt holes using a drilling machine, ensuring precise positioning and size (complying with bolt circle diameter requirements).
8. Surface Treatment: Conduct pickling, passivation (for stainless steel), galvanizing or painting to prevent corrosion and improve surface finish.
9. Inspection & Testing:- Dimensional inspection: Use calipers, micrometers and coordinate measuring machines (CMM) to verify key dimensions.- Non-destructive testing (NDT): Perform ultrasonic testing (UT), magnetic particle testing (MT) or penetrant testing (PT) to detect internal and surface defects.- Pressure testing: Conduct hydrostatic testing or pneumatic testing to ensure leak tightness.
10. Packaging & Storage: Package the qualified flanges with anti-rust paper, wooden cases or woven bags, label them with product information (e.g., material, size, standard) and store in a dry, ventilated warehouse.
