Neodymium Magnets Introduction

Neodymium magnets, also known as NdFeB magnets, are often mistakenly called "rubidium magnets." They are permanent magnets made of rare earth elements neodymium, iron, and boron, and are tetragonal crystals with the chemical formula Nd2Fe14B. Neodymium magnets are the strongest permanent magnets currently available and are also the most commonly used rare earth magnets[1]. They are widely used in electronic products, such as hard drives, speakers, and headphones, as well as in electric vehicle motors and wind turbine generators. Neodymium magnets were discovered in 1982 by Masato Sagawa of Sumitomo Special Metals. The energy product (BHmax) of this magnet is greater than that of samarium cobalt magnets, making it the material with the largest energy product in the world at that time.[2] Later, Sumitomo Special Metals successfully developed the powder metallurgy process, and General Motors successfully developed the spin-blowing melting process, which can produce neodymium iron boron magnets. [3]Neodyne magnets are easily corroded, causing the surface layer to peel off or break into fine particles. Therefore, protective treatment is required on the surface of the permanent magnet material during use, such as electroplating with nickel, zinc, gold, or tin, and spraying the surface with epoxy resin, etc.

Examples include electronics, scientific applications, and household items such as latches that require securely held components.Some customers mistakenly specify N52 neodymium magnets based solely on the material’s high energy product. They may assume a stronger magnet grade will yield better performance, but this is not always the case. The force that an N52 magnet can hold will vary depending on a wide variety of factors.
