* Material Selection: Choose appropriate metal (Stainless Steel UNS S13800). The material must be 15–20 HB softer than the flanges to prevent flange damage.
* Initial Sizing: Cut or forge solid metal ring blanks to the approximate size required for the specific API/ASME R-number
* CNC Machining: Use a CNC lathe to machine the ring into its distinct octagonal profile, ensuring the straight sealing surfaces are precisely angled to match the trapezoidal flange grooves.
* Surface Finishing: Finish the sealing surfaces, usually to a 63 RMS finish or better, to ensure a proper seal.
* Inspection & Marking: Verify dimensions and hardness against API 6A/ASME B16.20 standards. Mark with manufacturer, material, and size.
* Sealing Mechanism: Octagonal gaskets create a seal through plastic deformation and surface contact with the flange groove,providing a more reliable seal than oval gaskets, although they are less adaptable to older flange types.
* Pressure Management: For very high pressures (up to 20,000 PSI), specialized BX or RX gaskets (variants of the octagonal design) are used, which are pressure-energized.
* Reusability: While they can technically be reused, manufacturers generally recommend replacing RTJ gaskets to ensure seal integrity.
