A socket weld tee is a type of forged pipe fitting featuring three openings arranged at 90° angles, enabling fluid or gas diversion along a perpendicular branch. Its defining feature lies in the machined counterbores ("sockets") at all three ends. During installation, pipes are inserted into these sockets, leaving a distinct 1/16-inch gap between the pipe end and the socket shoulder to accommodate thermal expansion. A fillet weld is then applied around the exterior joint. This construction offers superior alignment accuracy and joint reliability compared to threaded systems, while avoiding the full-penetration welding complexity of butt-weld tees. They are engineered for moderate-to-high pressure systems (rated Class 3000 to 9000 per ASME B16.11) in petrochemical, hydraulic, power generation, and marine applications where vibration resistance and leak prevention are non-negotiable. Product processing
1. Material Selection: Forging-grade billets meeting ASTM composition limits are heated to 2150°F.
2. Hot Forging: Using closed-die presses at controlled temperatures, the tee shape is formed through plastic deformation under>20,000 psi pressure – optimizing grain flow and fatigue resistance.
3. Solution Annealing: Austenitic steels/alloys undergo rapid quenching to dissolve carbides and restore corrosion resistance.Post-anneal hardness must maintain ASTM max limits.
4. Machining: CNC lathes precisely bore sockets, ensuring exact tolerances (±0.005") and surface finishes (Ra ≤ 3.2 μm) necessary for pipe fit-up.
5. Surface Treatment: Pickling/passivation (ASTM A380) removes iron contamination while oxidizing chromium to enhance the corrosion barrier in stainless grades.
6. Final QC: Hydrostatic testing to 1.5x rated pressure, dimensional validation, NDE for defects.
