UNS S20910 XM-19 Stainless Steel Introduction
UNS S20910 XM-19 stainless steel is an austenitic stainless steel with a blend of strength and corrosion resistance that is higher than stainless steel grades 316, 316/316L, 317, and 317/317L .The high strength, corrosion resistance, and low
magneticpermeability of this alloy allows it to be used as a material for medical implants.
Machinability
Stainless steel grade UNS S20910 XM-19 has machinability characteristics that are similar to other austenitic stainless
steels;however it requires slower speeds, more power, and higher rigidity due to its high work hardening rate. It is recommended that coated carbide tooling be used.
Forming
Stainless steel grade UNS S20910 XM-19 can be formed using the same methods applied for other austenitic stainless steels. More power for forming and forging is needed for this alloy. Forging can be done at 1177-1204°C (2150-2200°F).
Welding
Welding of stainless steel grade UNS S20910 XM-19 can be performed using traditional joining processes. Recommended filler metal should be UNS S20910 XM-19 (AWS E/ER209).
Caution should be taken while using autogenous, high power density joining processes such as EB or laser welding, due to low FN potential and severe outgassing possibility.
Heat Treatment
Final annealing process performed for several of the applications, is done at 1065°C (1950°F), which is followed by water
quenching. In case this material is used in a strongly corrosive environment, annealing should be done at 1121°C (2050°F). This alloy cannot be hardened by heat treatment.

1. Raw Material Screening and Inspection: Rigorous screening and multi-dimensional professional testing of the base material are conducted. Through visual inspection and physicochemical testing, surface scratches, cracks, and internal hidden defects are checked to ensure the base material meets product manufacturing standards, is free of impurities and damage, and has stable performance. This lays a solid quality foundation for all subsequent processing steps, preventing unqualified base materials from entering the next process.2. Forming Processing: Professional forming processes are employed. Appropriate forming methods (such as die forging, stamping, etc.) are selected according to product specifications. Under precise temperature and pressure control, the inspected base material is forged or stamped into the preliminary shape of the pipe cap. The overall contour of the pipe cap, the basic structure of the socket, and the curvature of the cap body are precisely controlled to ensure that the semi-finished product is regular in shape, free from deformation and material shortage, and that the socket allowance meets the requirements of subsequent processing.3. Precision Machining: The semi-finished product undergoes fine machining using high-precision lathes, milling machines, and other professional equipment, completing the processing operations step by step. First, the socket hole is precisely machined, with strict control over the hole diameter, depth, and inner wall smoothness to ensure a perfect fit with the pipe end. Next, the pipe edge is ground to remove machining allowances and avoid burr residue. Finally, the cap's external dimensions are calibrated to control errors within the standard allowable range, ensuring a good fit and stable operation between the product and the pipe.4. Surface Treatment: The machined cap undergoes comprehensive surface treatment. Depending on the application scenario, appropriate methods such as pickling, sandblasting, and polishing are used to thoroughly remove surface burrs, oxide scale, machining residues, and stains, resulting in a smooth, flat surface with uniform color and optimized appearance. Simultaneously, surface treatment enhances the product's surface protection capabilities, effectively improving corrosion resistance, extending product lifespan, and adapting to various complex working conditions.5. Quality Inspection and Warehousing: A comprehensive and rigorous quality inspection is conducted, covering three core testing stages: dimensional accuracy inspection (verifying the dimensions of each part of the socket and cap to ensure they meet standards), sealing performance testing (simulating actual working conditions to test the sealing effect after welding and eliminate potential leakage risks), and visual inspection (checking for scratches, defects, and deformation on the surface). After all items pass the inspection, the products are cleaned, packaged in a standardized manner, and properly labeled for traceability before being stored for sale, ensuring that every product leaving the factory is of reliable quality and meets usage requirements.
