UNS S20910 XM-19 Stainless Steel Introduction
UNS S20910 XM-19 stainless steel is an austenitic stainless steel with a blend of strength and corrosion resistance that is higher than stainless steel grades 316, 316/316L, 317, and 317/317L .The high strength, corrosion resistance, and low
magneticpermeability of this alloy allows it to be used as a material for medical implants.
Machinability
Stainless steel grade UNS S20910 XM-19 has machinability characteristics that are similar to other austenitic stainless
steels;however it requires slower speeds, more power, and higher rigidity due to its high work hardening rate. It is recommended that coated carbide tooling be used.
Forming
Stainless steel grade UNS S20910 XM-19 can be formed using the same methods applied for other austenitic stainless steels. More power for forming and forging is needed for this alloy. Forging can be done at 1177-1204°C (2150-2200°F).
Welding
Welding of stainless steel grade UNS S20910 XM-19 can be performed using traditional joining processes. Recommended filler metal should be UNS S20910 XM-19 (AWS E/ER209).
Caution should be taken while using autogenous, high power density joining processes such as EB or laser welding, due to low FN potential and severe outgassing possibility.
Heat Treatment
Final annealing process performed for several of the applications, is done at 1065°C (1950°F), which is followed by water
quenching. In case this material is used in a strongly corrosive environment, annealing should be done at 1121°C (2050°F). This alloy cannot be hardened by heat treatment.

1. Raw Material Selection Select high-quality metal alloys based on the application, such as carbon steel (ASTM A105), stainless steel (SS304/316), or alloy steel. Round bar stock or billets are the most common raw materials used. 2. Billet Cutting Cut the raw bars into specific lengths (billets) using a sawing machine. The size is calculated to ensure enough material fills the forging dies with minimal waste. 3. Heating Heat the billets in an induction or gas furnace to the forging temperature (typically 1000°C – 1200°C for steel). This softens the metal, making it malleable for the molding process. 4. Closed Die Forging Place the heated billet between two specialized dies in a forging press. High pressure is applied to force the metal into the die cavities, forming the square head and the cylindrical plug body. 5. Trimming Remove the "flash" (excess metal that squeezed out between the dies) using a trimming press to achieve the rough net shape of the plug. 6. Heat Treatment Perform heat treatment, such as normalizing or solution annealing, to refine the grain structure, relieve internal stresses, and improve the mechanical strength of the forged blank. 7. Shot Blasting Clean the surface of the forged parts using high-speed steel grit or sand to remove oxide scale and provide a smooth, uniform finish. 8. Machining Use CNC lathes to precision-machine the external diameter and face the plug to exact dimensions. The square head is also refined during this stage if necessary. 9. Threading Cut the external threads—usually NPT (National Pipe Taper) or BSPT—using high-precision threading tools on a CNC machine to ensure a leak-proof seal. 10. Surface Treatment and Marking Apply anti-rust oil or protective coatings (like galvanizing for carbon steel). Permanent markings are stamped onto the head, including size, pressure rating (e.g., 3000#), material grade, and manufacturer logo. 11. Final Inspection Conduct a final quality check using thread gauges to verify accuracy. Hardness and chemical composition tests are performed to ensure compliance with international standards.
