4.Solution Annealing Heat Treatment
Cold-worked tubes are loaded into a bright annealing furnace with inert protective atmosphere to conduct solution annealing. The heating cycle dissolves intermetallic precipitates and eliminates residual stress accumulated during cold drawing. Controlled slow cooling prevents chromium and niobium carbide precipitation, which is critical to preserve the excellent corrosion resistance of Alloy 20. Temperature curve and holding time are recorded for each batch.
5.Finishing, Surface Treatment and Non-Destructive Testing
Heat-treated pipes are trimmed to the required cut lengths, then pickled and passivated to obtain a clean uniform matte surface. Full inspection is implemented: dimensional check (OD, ID, wall thickness, straightness), visual surface inspection for scratches and pits. NDT including ultrasonic testing and eddy current testing is applied to detect subsurface cracks, laminations and other hidden defects. Unqualified pieces are marked and segregated for rework or scrap.
6.Marking, Bundling, Packaging and Shipment
Pipes that pass all inspections are permanently marked with alloy grade, specification, heat number, ASTM standard and batch code. Pipes are bundled with protective separators to avoid surface abrasion. Waterproof wrapping and sturdy wooden cases are used for export packing. The corresponding MTR document covering chemical analysis, mechanical test and NDT records is prepared and attached to the shipment for full quality traceability.
