The incoming raw materials are 6061 aluminum alloy ingots or pre-rolled slabs with complete mill test certificates (MTC). The QC team verifies the heat number, alloy grade, chemical composition and mechanical properties against ASTM B209 standard. Visual inspection checks for surface cracks, segregation, inclusions, pores and scabs. Random sampling is conducted for spectrometer analysis to confirm the content of Mg, Si, Fe, Cu and other alloy elements, which are the key elements for 6061 precipitation hardening. Slab dimensions are measured and recorded for production planning. Qualified slabs are marked and stored in the designated area; non-conforming materials are isolated and returned with a rejection report.
2.Homogenization Heating & Hot Rolling:
Qualified slabs are loaded into a circulating air heating furnace for homogenization treatment. Follow a slow heating curve to avoid thermal stress cracking, hold at the set temperature for sufficient time to homogenize internal alloy segregation. After homogenization, the slab is transferred to the hot rolling mill. Multi-pass reversible hot rolling is adopted; single-pass reduction, rolling speed and tension are adjusted continuously to roll the slab to the target hot-rolled blank thickness. High-pressure water descaling is applied to remove oxide film on both top and bottom surfaces during rolling. The hot-rolled blank is then air-cooled to ambient temperature.
3.Cold Rolling & Online Flatness Correction:
Cooled hot-rolled blanks are delivered to the cold rolling production line. Multi-pass cold rolling with limited single-pass reduction is used to gradually reduce the plate thickness to the finished size, strictly controlling thickness tolerance to meet customer requirements. An online flatness detector monitors plate shape in real time. When edge waves, center waves or camber appear, the bending roll and tilting roll system are adjusted to correct flatness. Intermediate sampling inspection is carried out after several rolling passes to check thickness, surface condition and flatness, so rolling parameters can be adjusted promptly.
4.Solution Heat Treatment & Artificial Aging:
The calibrated cold-rolled plate is sent to the heat treatment furnace for T6 temper treatment (standard for 6061). First, solution treatment: heat slowly to the solution temperature, keep constant for enough holding time to dissolve Mg₂Si strengthening phases into the aluminum matrix, then implement rapid water quenching to retain the supersaturated solid solution. Next, artificial aging: heat the quenched plate to the aging temperature and hold for the specified period. This process precipitates fine and dispersed Mg₂Si particles, greatly improving the tensile strength, yield strength and hardness of the 6061 aluminum plate.
5.Finishing Machining & Pre-anodizing Inspection:
Heat-treated plates enter the finishing workshop. Excess margins are cut off by shearing or CNC plasma cutting according to drawing requirements. Cutting edges are ground and deburred to eliminate sharp burrs and cutting slag. Surface brushing is performed to remove heavy scratches and rolling lines for uniform anodizing effect. Full pre-treatment inspection covers overall dimension, thickness tolerance, diagonal deviation, flatness and surface quality. Visual inspection strictly screens out deep scratches, pits and embedded impurities which will cause defects after anodizing. Ultrasonic testing (UT) can be arranged on request to detect internal lamination and defects. Qualified plates are marked temporarily and transferred to the anodizing line.
6.Anodizing, Final Inspection & Export Packaging:
The plates go through the complete anodizing sequence: alkaline degreasing to remove oil and contaminants → alkaline etching for uniform matte surface → neutralization to remove smut → anodic oxidation under controlled voltage, current and temperature to form a dense aluminum oxide film → sealing treatment to seal the micropores of oxide layer → drying. After anodizing, QC checks oxide film thickness, uniformity, color consistency, corrosion resistance and surface appearance. Approved plates are marked with heat number, alloy grade, temper, size and QC stamp. Moisture-proof paper is placed between stacked plates. The whole stack is fixed on an export wooden pallet, tightened with packing belts, and desiccants are added to prevent moisture damage. Packing list, material test certificate and shipping mark are attached outside the package for overseas shipment.
