UNS C28000 H59 CuZn40 Brass Introduction
UNS C28000 CuZn40 brass, commonly referred to as Muntz metal, is an alpha-beta copper-zinc alloy with a balanced blend of strength, moderate corrosion resistance, and cost-effectiveness that outperforms lower-zinc brasses in structural applications. The high strength, good formability, and excellent machinability (in leaded variants) of this alloy allow it to be used in architectural components, marine hardware, and general engineering parts.
Machinability
Brass grade UNS C28000 CuZn40 has machinability characteristics typical of alpha-beta brasses; however, due to its moderate work hardening rate and zinc content, it requires stable cutting speeds, sufficient power, and higher rigidity to prevent tool chatter.It is recommended that coated carbide or high-speed steel tooling be used, with appropriate coolant to manage heat buildup.
Forming
Brass grade UNS C28000 CuZn40 can be formed using the same methods applied for other copper-zinc alloys, including hot forging,stamping, and bending. More power for forming and forging is needed for this alloy due to its higher strength compared to low-zinc brasses. Hot forging can be done at 650-800°C (1200-1470°F).
Welding
Welding of brass grade UNS C28000 CuZn40 can be performed using traditional joining processes such as brazing, soldering, and gas metal arc welding (GMAW). Recommended filler metal should be matching copper-zinc alloys (AWS RCuZn-B) or silicon bronze to minimize dezincification. Caution should be taken while using high-temperature welding processes such as arc welding, due to high zinc vaporization potential and severe porosity possibility.
Heat Treatment
Final annealing process performed for several of the applications, such as stress relief or softening for forming, is done at
600-700°C (1110-1290°F), which is followed by air cooling or water quenching. In case this material is used in a corrosive
environment, stress-relief annealing should be done at 250-300°C (480-570°F) to reduce residual stresses. This alloy cannot be hardened by heat treatment; mechanical strength is increased through cold working.
Machinability

1. Raw Material Preparation: Select qualified brass/stainless steel/carbon steel, cut to standard blanks, clean surface impurities, and conduct incoming inspection (composition, hardness, dimension).
2. Blank Forming: Form straight coupling blanks by cold extrusion/hot forging, remove flash, and perform stress relief annealing to ensure straightness and avoid deformation.
3. Precision CNC Machining: Finish machine coupling body (outer hexagon, inner bore, sealing seat), process standard male threads (NPT/BSP), deburr and chamfer to ensure precision.
4. Matching Parts Processing: Machine compression nuts and ferrules, control fit clearance and dimensional accuracy to ensure smooth assembly and reliable sealing.
5. Assembly & Preliminary Inspection: Assemble nuts and ferrules in order, check assembly smoothness and thread fit, and screen unqualified semi-finished products.
6. Surface Anti-corrosion Treatment: Conduct nickel plating/passivation/anti-rust coating to improve corrosion resistance, avoiding peeling and color difference.
7. Finished Inspection: Inspect thread accuracy, dimension, sealing performance, and conduct pressure test for key products; reject unqualified products.
8. Packaging & Warehousing: Package with anti-scratch materials, mark specifications clearly, and store in a dry, ventilated environment.
