UNS A955083 AA5083 (DIN 3.3547) aluminum alloy is a non-heat-treatable Al-Mg series anti-corrosion structural aluminum, one of the most widely used 5xxx series aluminum alloys in marine, chemical and industrial fields. It features moderate-to-high strength, excellent corrosion resistance (especially in marine and saltwater environments), outstanding weldability, good formability and low-temperature toughness, making it ideal for applications requiring long-term durability in harsh conditions. It is widely used in shipbuilding, pressure vessels, chemical equipment, transportation tanks, automotive components, architectural facades and other industrial applications where corrosion resistance and structural reliability are critical.
Machinability
Aluminum alloy grade UNS A955083 AA5083 has fair-to-good machinability characteristics, with performance varying significantly by temper condition. Annealed (O-temper) material exhibits high ductility, which may lead to built-up edge (BUE) on cutting tools and chip-breaking challenges, while strain-hardened tempers (H111, H112) offer improved cutting stability. It is recommended to use sharp, high-speed steel or uncoated/coated carbide tooling with polished flutes to reduce material adhesion; high cutting speeds with sufficient water-soluble coolant or lubricant are advised to achieve efficient, burr-free processing.
Forming
Aluminum alloy grade UNS A955083 AA5083 can be formed using all conventional cold and hot forming methods widely applied for non-heat-treatable Al-Mg structural aluminum alloys. It has excellent ductility, which allows cold bending, stamping, roll forming and other cold forming processes to be completed at room temperature (especially in the annealed O temper) without additional preheating for most moderate forming operations. Hot forming and forging can be done at 300-450°C (572-842°F), with controlled cooling rates recommended under general working conditions to avoid residual stresses and maintain consistent mechanical properties.
Welding
Welding of aluminum alloy grade UNS A955083 AA5083 can be performed using all traditional fusion welding processes, including GMAW (MIG), GTAW (TIG), SAW and other common welding methods. Recommended filler metal should match the base material strength and corrosion resistance; commonly used grades include ER5356 and ER5183, which offer good compatibility and mechanical performance with AA5083. Preheating is generally not required for thin-walled parts (<6mm) at room temperature; for thick-walled parts (≥12mm) or in low-temperature environments, preheating to 100-150°C is recommended to avoid porosity and thermal cracking, while thorough cleaning of the weld zone to remove oxides and contaminants is critical for high-quality welds.
Heat Treatment
Final stress relief annealing process performed for welded structural parts or precision formed parts is done at 300-350°C
(572-662°F), which is followed by air cooling as required to reduce residual stresses without significant loss of strength.
Homogenization treatment to refine grain and homogenize structure can be done at 450-500°C (842-932°F) for semi-finished products. This non-heat-treatable aluminum alloy cannot be hardened by conventional quenching and precipitation hardening heat treatment, and its strength is mainly adjusted by controlled strain hardening (cold working) and temper control.
