Threaded pipe caps—also known as end caps, plugs, or blind caps—are indispensable sealing components within piping systems. Primarily used to seal the ends of pipes, they serve to prevent the leakage of media (such as liquids or gases) and block the ingress of foreign objects. Simultaneously, they protect the pipe opening and its threads, thereby fulfilling a dual function of both sealing and protection. Functionally equivalent to pipe plugs, they are widely utilized across a diverse range of industrial and civil piping applications.

Machinability
Stainless steel grade UNS S20910 XM-19 has machinability characteristics that are similar to other austenitic stainless
steels;however it requires slower speeds, more power, and higher rigidity due to its high work hardening rate. It is recommended that coated carbide tooling be used.
Forming
Stainless steel grade UNS S20910 XM-19 can be formed using the same methods applied for other austenitic stainless steels. More power for forming and forging is needed for this alloy. Forging can be done at 1177-1204°C (2150-2200°F).
Welding
Welding of stainless steel grade UNS S20910 XM-19 can be performed using traditional joining processes. Recommended filler metal should be UNS S20910 XM-19 (AWS E/ER209).
Caution should be taken while using autogenous, high power density joining processes such as EB or laser welding, due to low FN potential and severe outgassing possibility.
Heat Treatment
Final annealing process performed for several of the applications, is done at 1065°C (1950°F), which is followed by water
quenching. In case this material is used in a strongly corrosive environment, annealing should be done at 1121°C (2050°F). This alloy cannot be hardened by heat treatment.

1. Raw Material Selection and CuttingSelect high-quality round steel bars (such as ASTM A105 or SS316) and cut them intobillets of the required length using a sawing machine.
2. Heating Heat the billets in an induction furnace to the forging temperature, typically between1000°C and 1200°C, to ensure metal plasticity.
3. Die ForgingPlace the heated billet into a forging press. Use high pressure and molds to shape themetal into the rough form of a cap, which improves the internal grain structure.
4. Trimming and Shot Blasting Remove the excess metal flash from the edges and use shot blasting to clean off oxidescale and smooth the surface.
5. Heat Treatment Apply normalizing or solution treatment based on the material type to relieve internal stresses and enhance mechanical properties.
6. Machining Use CNC lathes to bore the internal diameter and finish the external surfaces to meet theprecise dimensions required by standards like ASME B16.11.
7. Threading Cut the internal threads (such as NPT or BSPT) using high-precision tapping machines or CNC threading tools.
8. Surface Treatment Apply anti-corrosion coating, such as galvanizing or black phosphating for carbon steel, or passivation for stainless steel
.9. MarkingStamp the required information on the body, including size, pressure rating (e.g.,3000LB), material grade, and heat number
.10. Final Inspection Perform quality checks using thread gauges for accuracy and conduct hardness orchemical tests to ensure compliance.
