UNS S20910 XM-19 stainless steel is an austenitic stainless steel with a blend of strength and corrosion resistance that is higher than stainless steel grades 316, 316/316L, 317, and 317/317L .The high strength, corrosion resistance, and low
magneticpermeability of this alloy allows it to be used as a material for medical implants.
Machinability
Stainless steel grade UNS S20910 XM-19 has machinability characteristics that are similar to other austenitic stainless
steels;however it requires slower speeds, more power, and higher rigidity due to its high work hardening rate. It is recommended that coated carbide tooling be used.
Forming
Stainless steel grade UNS S20910 XM-19 can be formed using the same methods applied for other austenitic stainless steels. More power for forming and forging is needed for this alloy. Forging can be done at 1177-1204°C (2150-2200°F).
Welding
Welding of stainless steel grade UNS S20910 XM-19 can be performed using traditional joining processes. Recommended filler metal should be UNS S20910 XM-19 (AWS E/ER209).
Caution should be taken while using autogenous, high power density joining processes such as EB or laser welding, due to low FN potential and severe outgassing possibility.
Heat Treatment
Final annealing process performed for several of the applications, is done at 1065°C (1950°F), which is followed by water
quenching. In case this material is used in a strongly corrosive environment, annealing should be done at 1121°C (2050°F). This alloy cannot be hardened by heat treatment.

Quality control focuses on: continuous metal flow lines and no forging defects (cracks, creases, underfill).4. Standard Heat TreatmentEliminate forging residual stress and optimize metallographic structure and mechanical properties:- Carbon steel: Normalizing + Tempering- Stainless steel: Solution annealing- Alloy steel: Quenching + TemperingQuality control: Batch hardness and mechanical property testing, and complete process records are maintained.5. CNC Precision MachiningTwo-step roughing and finishing are performed using CNC lathes/machining centers, strictly adhering to ASME B16.11 dimensional tolerance standards:- Precision machining of saddle-shaped bevels (perfectly matching the outer diameter of the tube)- Boring of the bearing end with an internal shoulder, strictly controlling surface roughness and hole diameter tolerances- Finish machining of weld bevels, chamfering sharp edges, and controlling wall thickness uniformity.6. 100% Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)- Visual Inspection of Surface Defects (VT)- Magnetic Particle Testing (MT, for carbon steel) / Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT, for stainless steel) for Surface and Near-Surface Defects- Ultrasonic Testing (UT) for Internal Defects in Thick-Walled, High-Pressure (6000/9000) ProductsAll tests are performed according to ASTM standards.7. Surface Treatment- Carbon Steel: Sandblasting (Sa2.5) + Rust-Inhibiting Oil/Coating; Hot-Dip Galvanizing (HDG) for high corrosion resistance requirements- Stainless Steel: Pickling and Passivation; Polishing for sanitary applications8. Permanent Traceability MarkingLaser or low-stress stamping on non-welded surfaces. Standard marking includes: nominal size, pressure rating (3000/6000/9000), material grade, heat number, and manufacturing standard.9. Final Inspection and Verification100% dimensional inspection, hydrostatic test (1.5 times rated working pressure, leakage/deformation not allowed), optional airtightness test. All quality documents are compiled and verified before delivery.
