Butt Welding Cap Introduction
A butt-weld pipe cap is a welded fitting installed at the end of a pipeline to seal the opening and stop the flow of the medium; it is also known as a pipe end cap or plug. Key features and functions include: reliable sealing (utilizing butt-weld connections to withstand high pressure and temperature while providing excellent sealing performance); shape design (typically circular, with common forms including standard ellipsoidal and hemispherical shapes); diverse materials (including carbon steel, stainless steel—such as 304 and 316—and alloy steel to suit various industrial environments); and wide-ranging applications (commonly found in petrochemicals, power generation, food processing, steam systems, and high-pressure piping).

Butt Weld Cap (usually referring to butt weld pipe cap) is a key pipe fitting used in pipeline engineering to seal the end of
pipelines. Its production and processing involve complex metal forming and heat treatment techniques to ensure high pressure resistance and leak-proof performance.Core production and processing flow The manufacturing of butt welding caps mainly adopts steel plate stamping method or secondary forming method. The core steps are
as follows:
• Raw material preparation: Select high-quality carbon steel, stainless steel or alloy steel plates or pipes and conduct chemicalcomposition and mechanical property tests.
• Blanking and shearing: Calculate the unfolded area based on the size of the pipe cap and cut the steel plate into a circularmaterial cake.
• Heating (hot forming) : The material cake is placed in a heating furnace and heated to the forging temperature (typically
between 900°C and 1050°C) to enhance the plasticity of the metal.
• Stamping forming: The heated material cake is placed in a dedicated hydraulic press and die, and the long elliptical spherical or disc-shaped tube cap shape is stamped and stretched one or more times.
• Heat treatment: After forming, normalizing, solution treatment or annealing treatment is carried out to eliminate internal
stress during stamping and restore the grain structure and mechanical properties of the metal.
• Beveling processing: Use a dedicated beveling machine to turn a 30° or 37.5° welding bevel at the end of the pipe cap to
facilitate on-site butt welding with the pipe.
• Surface treatment and flaw detection: Sandblasting for rust removal, pickling and passivation are carried out, and ultrasonic or magnetic particle flaw detection (UT/MT) is conducted to check for cracks. Finally, anti-rust paint or marking codes are applied.
