The 45° Threaded Elbow (also known as a 45° Screwed Elbow) is a pivotal directional fitting within piping systems, specifically designed to facilitate a minor 45° change in pipeline direction. It serves to connect two sections of pipe while guiding the smooth flow of the conveyed medium. Compared to a 90° elbow, its curvature is more gradual, effectively minimizing turbulence and pressure loss during fluid flow. Widely utilized across various industrial and civil piping applications, it offers a blend of practicality and convenience. — The connection method employs threading (screwing), supporting a diverse range of thread types including NPT (ANSI/ASME B1.20.1), Rc, BSP, G, and PT. These fittings are categorized into internal-thread, external-thread, and combined internal/external-thread configurations (street elbows). Machinability
Stainless steel grade UNS S20910 XM-19 has machinability characteristics that are similar to other austenitic stainless
steels;however it requires slower speeds, more power, and higher rigidity due to its high work hardening rate. It is recommended that coated carbide tooling be used.
Forming
Stainless steel grade UNS S20910 XM-19 can be formed using the same methods applied for other austenitic stainless steels. More power for forming and forging is needed for this alloy. Forging can be done at 1177-1204°C (2150-2200°F).
Welding
Welding of stainless steel grade UNS S20910 XM-19 can be performed using traditional joining processes. Recommended filler metal should be UNS S20910 XM-19 (AWS E/ER209).
Caution should be taken while using autogenous, high power density joining processes such as EB or laser welding, due to low FN potential and severe outgassing possibility.
Heat Treatment
Final annealing process performed for several of the applications, is done at 1065°C (1950°F), which is followed by water
quenching. In case this material is used in a strongly corrosive environment, annealing should be done at 1121°C (2050°F). This alloy cannot be hardened by heat treatment.

2. Forging and FormingThis is the critical step that determines the strength of the elbow:Heating: Heat the blank to its plastic deformation temperature (rendering it soft and ductile).Closed-Die Forging: Place the heated metal into a die shaped at a 45-degree angle, and use a press to force the metal to completely fill the die cavity.Trimming: Remove the excess flash (overflow material) generated during the forging process.
3. MachiningThe key step in transforming the forging into a precision pipe fitting:Boring and Precision Milling: Machine the inner bores or outer diameters at both ends of the 45-degree angle to ensure the centerlines form a precise 45-degree angle.Surface Turning: Finish the end faces and outer diameters to ensure compliance with standard dimensions, such as those specified in ASME B16.11.
4. ThreadingInternal/External Thread Cutting: Machining threads onto the ends of the elbow fittings. Industry standards typically specify NPT (American National Standard Taper Pipe Threads) or BSPT (British Standard Taper Pipe Threads).Thread Inspection: Using plug gauges (thread gauges) to verify thread depth and pitch accuracy.
5. Heat Treatment and Surface TreatmentAnnealing/Solution Treatment: Relieving internal stresses generated during forging and machining processes, thereby enhancing material toughness and corrosion resistance.Surface Cleaning: Removing mill scale through polishing, sandblasting, or shot blasting.Protective Coating: Applying electro-galvanizing, hot-dip galvanizing (for galvanized elbows), or rust-inhibiting oil as required.
6. Quality Inspection and MarkingAngle Inspection: Measuring the bend angle to ensure strict compliance with specifications.Leak Testing: Conducting pneumatic or hydrostatic tests under specified pressure to ensure the absence of cracks or pinholes that could lead to leakage.Marking: Stamping the material grade, dimensions, pressure rating (e.g., 3000 LBS), and applicable standard number.
